Ganache

250 Toorak Road, South Yarra VIC 3141, Australia • +61 (03) 9804 7485 • Map • Website

I almost walked out of Ganache when I read in their menu that their chocolatier Arno Backes had worked at Koko Black. Having had a disappointing experience there earlier in the week I was reluctant to try another over milky hot chocolate. I need not have worried.

As the shop name suggests the hot chocolate served here is a ganache consisting of 60% cocoa content chocolate mixed with cream. The amount of cream varies and in this case I would argue that a darker chocolate and less cream might have produced a more satisfying taste. I like being given a choice of milk or dark chocolate and being given my own frothed milk jug so I can mix my drink to my heart's content a la Lindt.

However at Ganache you are served your hot chocolate (for the eye watering price of $6) in a coffee cup. A small amount of frothed milk is layered on top and a dark chocolate swirl placed on it to give a lovely decorative appearance.

The chocolate is thin, but sufficiently intense to nevertheless give you a real kick. I found myself licking the bottom of my cup so obviously this tasting was a success. However for health (that's a LOT of cream to be gulping down!) and personal preference reasons I would favour the Lindt cafe's hot chocolates over this one.
