Brazuca

48 N. Steyne, Manly NSW 2095, Australia • +61 (02) 9977-6307 • Map • Website

We visited Brazuca on the recommendation of a friend. Since the friend was coming with us we figured it was probably going to be OK and we weren't disappointed.

Brazuca is a Brazilian Churrascaria. What this means is meat, meat and more meat. The menu is basically fixed price ($38 for dinner on a Saturday night) which gives you some side dishes (rice, beans, tomato salsa, potato salad, green salad, cassava chips and some yummy plantain fritters) and all the barbeque you can eat.

Having ordered, the sides quickly appeared and then we sat back to await the main event. Somewhere out back someone was working very hard over a barby and soon large (~60cm; almost like small swords) skewers of goodies were brought into the restaurant. The waiter will stop at your table and offer you some of his skewer. If it's something like the garlic prawns, chicken hearts or chorizo, you can say how many you want. For the meats (we had lamb, pork, chicken and a few different cuts of beef), typically you will use your tongs to grab hold of a slice as it is carved off for you. You can request your slice to come off whichever piece of meat on the skewer looks cooked to your liking. One nice thing: when some rump came by one of us commented that it wasn't really rare enough for their taste. Not much later a new skewer of rump came by which was perfectly cooked for them.

On the night we visited, there were 15 items on the barbeque menu however we only saw 13 of them. That was more than enough to satisfy us though, and in fact some of us had difficulty making it through all 13. That mission wasn't helped - but we weren't complaining - by them bringing many of the items round more than once.

The wine list isn't huge but we had a very drinkable Barossa shiraz (2006 Fox Gordon 8 Uncles) at a very reasonable price. If you want something special you can bring it along as the restaurant is BYO licensed.

There are desserts on the menu but by the time we had been through all the meat we couldn't face the thought of them. Overall we had a great night. The food was good and it was backed up by great service. We'll definitely be back.
