Porchetta
110 East 7th Street, New York New York 10009, USA • +1 (212) 777 2151 • Map • WebsiteThis tiny shop front isn't really a restaurant as such. There are three stools against a bar along one wall and the owner Sara Jenkins does one thing only. Yet she does that one thing exceptionally well. Porchetta is the Roman Italian version of rolled roast pork, covered in a spice mix of salt, rosemary and fennel and roasted on a spit until it is covered with delectable crackling.
Lacking the space to spit roast a whole pig Jenkins has improvised by rolling loins from happy Hampshire hogs and then wrapping these in pork belly. The meat is covered in her own signature spice mix of wild fennel pollen, thyme, sage, rosemary, garlic and lots of salt and pepper. The resulting pork parcels are tied with string and spit roasted. The finished result is simply superb, whether served on a roll as the best pork sandwich in the world, or on a plate with whatever greens are around and potatoes with crispy burnt ends. I would recommend heartily that you go for the plate as it would be a pity to miss out on these superb roast potatoes.
What can I say? Pure heaven and worth a pilgrimage to visit.
